Yardarm Beach
The Yardarm Beach Condominium is built on both the ocean and bay sides of the sand bar known as West Hampton Beach.
Occupying a 600 foot wide site with the plan determined in part by the configuration of protected dune areas, the 176 one, two and three bedroom units are staggered in plan so that all apartments are entered between living and sleeping spaces.
By separating the entrance side bridge walkways from the bedroom windows with triangular sun courts, the bedrooms enjoy an unusual sense of isolation from the main circulation pattern. Similarly, the gracious ocean and bay front balconies, which are part of every unit, give the user the illusion of being the only occupant.
The meandering geometry of the overall plan is periodically interrupted by breezeways that link the entrance walkways to the waterside frontage. These channel the air movement and, adapting Daniel Bernoulli’s ideas, enhance through ventilation in the adjacent apartment units.
