USTA National Tennis Center
The USTA National Tennis Center, the home of the annual US Open tennis tournament accommodates over 530,000 fans during a two week period each fall. By superimposing a structurally independent octagonal bowl over one end of an abandoned stadium, a 20,000 seat Stadium Court and an 8,000 seat Grandstand Court were created, each with ideal sightlines. The 15 acre site is organized between a highly active, "urban" arrival plaza and a park-like grove marked by a curving row of 50 year old sycamore trees.
Using fast-tracking techniques and extraordinary cooperation from municipal authorities, the complex was constructed in ten months for a total cost of fewer than ten million dollars.
