The High Line
The High Line, the abandoned elevated railway running through Manhattan’s West Side, is reactivated on three levels by the introduction of transparent containers, reminiscent of the box containers that originally moved along the line. The first level of intervention occurs at the line’s underside: a series of transparent boxes housing commercial, institutional, and recreational activities suspended from the structure to reclaim the otherwise undesirable space underneath. The second intervention takes place at the interstitial space between the top and bottom of the line, providing access from the street level to the platform, leading to the space of third intervention, where lies a relentless flower bed of plants that have been naturally growing on the existing structure. Throughout the scheme, transparent containers serve a critical purpose by being activity containers, access points, skylights during the day, and lanterns at night.
